Fasting intention and iftar prayer

According to Islamic rules, it is mandatory for healthy people to end the day’s fast during Ramadan by eating Sehri before Fajr and with Iftar in the evening. Niyyat and Dua must be done during these two times. That is, one has to make an intention to fast after Sehri and start Iftar after offering Namaz before Iftar.

fasting intention

When Ramadan begins, many people are concerned about the intention of fasting. Many people think that fasting must be said orally. The Arabic intention prevalent in society is to say, or at least verbally, that I intend to fast tomorrow.

Such thinking is not right. Because a verbal intention is not necessary for fasting; Instead, it is enough to resolve to fast in the heart.

But if someone wants to fast with intention, then he should make an intention in his mind like this-

Before Subha Sadiq, decide in your mind that ‘Today I will keep fast’ or before about 11 o’clock in the day, decide in your mind that I have kept today’s fast. It is not necessary to make intention through mouth, but it is Mustahab. (Radul Mukhtar: 2/377)

If you can speak and understand Arabic well, you can do Niyat in Arabic. Otherwise it is better to dictate in Bengali.

b dr In the case of obligatory fasting, the intention of fasting should not be done at night or the fasting will not be pure.

Niyat should be done before Fajr i.e. at night. The Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, said:

مَنْ لَمْ يُجْمِعْ الصِّيَامَ قَبْلَ الْفَجْرِ فَلاَ صِيَامَ لَهُ

A person who does not intend to fast before the time of Fajr does not make his fast pure. (Abu Dawood: 2454)

مَنْ لَمْ يَبِيْتِ الصِيَامَ مَنَ اللَّيْلِ فَلاَ صِيَامَ لَهُ

Whoever does not intend to fast during the night, his fast is not pure. (This instruction is only for obligatory fasting) (Nasai: 4/196)

iftar prayer

Before iftar one should recite this dua in front of iftar: بسم الله اَللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَ عَلَى رِزْقِكَ اَفْطَرْتُ

Bengali pronunciation: Allahumma laka chumtu wa ala rizqika wa aftartu birahmatika ya arhmar rahimin. (Narrated by Mu’adh ibn Zahra, Abu Dawood, Hadith: 2358)

Meaning: O Allah, I am fasting for your pleasure and breaking the fast for your pleasure.
Bengali Niyyat of Iftar: O Allah, I am ending the fast after the obligatory fasting of the month of Ramadan according to the rules prescribed by You and starting Iftar with the hope of mercy. Then ‘Bismillah Wala Barkatillah’ Iftar.
